texture-compression-unaligned
Specification: WebGPU § texture-compression-unaligned
Compressed formats store texels in fixed-size blocks - 4×4 for BC and ETC2, up to 12×12 for ASTC - and core WebGPU requires a compressed texture’s size.width and size.height to be multiples of the block width and height. With this feature enabled on the device, createTexture() accepts other dimensions for block-compressed formats.
Content pipelines that compress arbitrary images benefit most: thumbnails, user uploads, UI atlases, and assets authored without block-size discipline. Without the feature, such images have to be padded to the next block boundary before compression, with texture coordinates adjusted so the padding is never sampled.
The feature relaxes texture creation only. Compressed data is still made of whole blocks, so the blocks along the right and bottom edges cover texels past the texture’s logical size, just as they already do for the smaller mip levels of an aligned texture. Each format family still needs its own feature - BC, ETC2, or ASTC - which this one does not replace.
