texture_formats_tier1
WGSL language feature
Specification: WGSL § texture_formats_tier1
Check navigator.gpu?.wgslLanguageFeatures?.has('texture_formats_tier1')
before choosing a shader that uses this language feature. It is available automatically
when supported; requires texture_formats_tier1; documents the dependency
and rejects the shader on unsupported implementations. This language token is not a
requiredFeatures entry for requestDevice(); any additional
device requirements are described below.
Base WGSL accepts only a fixed set of texel formats in texture_storage_* types. This language feature adds the 8- and 16-bit one- and two-channel formats, rgba16unorm and rgba16snorm, and the packed rgb10a2unorm, rgb10a2uint, and rg11b10ufloat formats, so a shader can declare, for example, texture_storage_2d<rg16float, write>.
The language token only covers shader compilation. Creating such a texture with STORAGE_BINDING usage and binding it still needs the device’s texture-formats-tier1 feature, whose format table decides which access modes each format allows; read-write access on some of them needs texture-formats-tier2.
Compact storage formats save memory and bandwidth in compute post-processing, normal and motion-vector buffers, and HDR intermediates that do not need four wide channels. Without the language feature or the device feature, write to a core storage format such as rgba8unorm, r32float, or rgba16float and convert in a later pass if needed.

Availability = share of first-party, non-quarantined reports with WebGPU on a hardware
(non-fallback) adapter
whose browser reports this token in navigator.gpu.wgslLanguageFeatures.
This measures language support in the browser, not a GPU hardware capability.
